# Images in documents

Put screenshots and mockups where a spec or a context document needs them.



A screenshot often says in one picture what a paragraph struggles to. You can add one to any spec
or context document you can edit, and move it, copy it or download it later.

## Add an image [#add-an-image]

There are three ways, and they all do the same thing:

* Type `/Image` on an empty line and pick one or more files.
* Paste a screenshot.
* Drag a file from your desktop to the spot you want. A line shows where it will land.

While an image uploads, a placeholder shows its progress. Nothing is saved until the upload
finishes, so if it fails your document stays exactly as it was: the placeholder turns into a short
note with **Retry**, and **×** removes the note.

Images can be PNG, JPEG, GIF or WebP, up to 10 MB each. A file of another type, or a larger one, is
refused when you pick or drop it, with a message saying why. Add other files to the plan's
[context](/docs/context-sources) instead.

## Ask the planning agent [#ask-the-planning-agent]

The agent can put an image in a spec or the epic for you. Ask in plain words, for example "put the
login wireframe from context into SPEC-3 under Screens". It can use:

* a file you put in the chat: paste or drop it with your message and it is saved to the plan's
  context under `attachments`,
* an image in the plan's [context](/docs/context-sources), including one in a parent plan's context
  or in a plan this one depends on,
* a picture inside a Word or PowerPoint document in context,
* an image already in one of the plan's documents,
* a public image on the web, given its https link.

It cannot reach images in other plans it has no view of, even ones you can open. It adds images only
while you can edit the plan: if your access changes during a conversation, its next attempt is
refused.

## Move, copy and download [#move-copy-and-download]

Images, [canvases](/docs/canvases) and diagrams are blocks you can rearrange. Hover one to see its
handle on the left, then drag it anywhere in the document. **Undo** puts it back.

Each one also has a **⋯** menu, and an image or a diagram opens the same menu when you right-click
it:

* **Copy image** copies the picture itself, so it pastes into a chat app or a design tool. Pasted
  back into a Plansmith document, it is the same image, not a second copy.
* **Download** saves it. An image keeps its own format; a canvas or a diagram downloads as a PNG.
* **Cut** and **Delete** remove it from the document.

## Who can see an image [#who-can-see-an-image]

An image follows the sharing of the document it is in. Someone who can open the plan sees it; anyone
else sees a placeholder asking them to sign in. When you
[push a plan](/docs/push-to-your-issue-tracker) to Linear or Jira, its images are uploaded to your
issue tracker so they show there too.

People who can only view a document can copy and download its images, but not move or remove them.
